Air India to connect Delhi with San Francisco

Air India will launch a new direct service connecting New Delhi with San Francisco before the end of this year. Flights will commence on December 2, operating thrice a week in both directions, that is, on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, using Boeing 777-200LR (long range) aircraft.

The Boeing 777-200LR aircraft has a seating capacity of 238 passengers, made up of eight first class, 35 business class and 195 economy class seats.

The plan was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Silicon Valley. The route will mark the first direct flights between the two cities and Air India’s fourth U.S. route with existing services to New York (JFK and Newark) and Chicago. “By creating the first-ever nonstop service between San Francisco and Delhi, Air India has united two great cultural and economic centres of the world. As the only nonstop flight between India and the West Coast of the United States, I fully expect this new service to be a success,” said San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee.

The announcement thwarts speculation about air India’s plans to launch direct flights to the destination from Bengaluru, a route that would have created the longest air route in the world to connect two of the world’s largest IT hubs.

Jet adds four new domestic routes this winter

Effective 15 November, Jet will introduce new flights from Mumbai and Delhi to the eastern port city of Vishakhapatnam, plus new daily flights between Srinagar and Jammu. It will also launch direct flights between the eastern metropolises of Chennai and Kolkata.

And the Delhi-Mumbai route will be upgraded with the deployment of a twin-aisle Airbus A330 aircraft, offering extra seat capacity. A 16th daily flight will also be introduced on this high-demand sector.

“The Indian domestic sector is witnessing a robust growth in demand,” said Gaurang Shetty, Jet’s senior vice president of commercial. “The new flights and additional frequencies in our 2015 Winter Schedule will further strengthen our robust domestic network, while offering our guests additional choice and flexibility to plan their travel. We are happy to introduce the A330-200 wide body aircraft between Delhi and Mumbai to provide additional connectivity on this key route.”

In addition to the new routes, Jet will increase the frequency of several existing services, with a key focus on Bengaluru. This includes the addition of a 10th daily flight between Bengaluru and Delhi, an 11th daily service from Mumbai to the Garden City, a third daily service between Hyderabad and Bengaluru, a sixth daily flight on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru route, and six more weekly flights between Bengaluru and Goa.

Singapore Airlines Named Best Global Carrier for Business Travel

For the second straight year, Singapore Airlines has been recognized as the top international carrier for business travel.

Fortune and Travel + Leisure polled travelers about their habits and preferences when traveling for work to generate 2015's Best in Business Travel survey. Readers were asked to assess airlines on a variety of factors, including customer service, frequent flyer programs, in-flight class experience, food and entertainment options and airport lounges.

While Emirates, Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways rounded out the top five, it's clear Singapore Airlines is determined to remain ahead of the pack.

Boasting in-flight menus geared toward the flight's route and a revamped premium economy class set to debut aboard U.S. flights later this year, Singapore's flag carrier appears to be winning over road warriors in a hurry.

Moscow tops biz travel cost rankings

The latest Hogg Robinson Group (HRG) bi-annual Interim Hotel Survey shows that for the twelfth year running Moscow remains the most expensive city for business travel, with a 6.07 per cent increase in average room rate (ARR) compared to last year.

The findings from HRG Interim Hotel Survey also reported that 31 of the top cities experienced an increase in ARR with only 15 cities falling and five remaining static.

Key findings include:

• With 12 years in the top spot, Moscow has benefitted from a modest growth in GBP translating into the huge growth locally, due to extreme movements in the exchange rate.

• Mega cities continue to dominate; cities within a region continue to see a large disparity in terms of ARR movement, showing once again that regional performance is diminishing compared to mega city performance.

• This is again witnessed by the regional charts from the survey with only the Americas showing ARR growth (9.89 per cent). Middle East West Asia (MEWA) has seen a dramatic decrease with ARR down by 19.47 per cent. This is caused not only by the ongoing mega city trend but also by more supply in key cities together with a stalling of key feeder markets such as Russia.

• The full effects of the slowdown in the oil industry can be witnessed in both Aberdeen and Houston. For the first time in many years hotels in both cities are having to significantly discount room rates to maintain demand.

British Airways launches first refitted B747

British Airways has started flying its first refurbished B747 on the key business route between Heathrow and New York JFK.

The upgraded aircraft is the first of 18 B747s that are due to be refitted. BA plans to operate them on routes such as Heathrow to New York, Chicago, Boston, Lagos, Riyadh and Kuwait.

The rollout of the refitted 18 aircraft is due to be completed by August 2016 when further routes will be added.

Kathryn Doyle, BA’s aircraft cabin interiors manager, said: "Our customers love our new aircraft, but the 747s hold a special place in their heart, so we're delighted to have been able to revamp these aircraft.

“They'll look and feel like new now, with enhanced comfort, technology and design.”

India's e-visa scheme extended to Britishers

From August 15, Britons will be one of 113 nationalities who will be able to apply for India's “e-Tourist visa”, making the process of obtaining correct entry documents cheaper and quicker.

UK passport holders will be able to apply and pay for an online visa using the Indian government’s tourist visa website, removing the need to book an appointment at the outsourced visa processing agency, or make a laborious postal application.

The cost will be reduced from the current fee of £89.44 to $60 (£39), and rather than book an appointment at an application centre or provide documents in the post, applicants will now be able to upload documents, pay the balance and track their application online.

Visas will still not be issued immediately - once an online application is submitted, travellers can expect to receive entry documents via email within four days. But it is an improvement on the previous arrangements, which saw a typical postal application take up to two weeks.

Air India increases free baggage limit

At a time when airlines in India are offering lower fares for not carrying check in baggage, national carrier Air India has announced an enhanced free check-in baggage allowance of 25 kgs for passengers travelling in the Economy Class in the domestic sectors. All other airlines offer 15 kg free bagage.

Air India is the only airline to have done so. This offer is valid from Aug 12, 2015 to Feb 7, 2016, across all fare levels of Economy Class. Passengers who have booked before Aug 12, 2015, will also get the benefit of the increased allowance. Additionally, infants will now get a free baggage allowance of 10 kgs

Passengers travelling on Alliance Air flights and connecting to Air India flights and vice versa, will also be eligible for this offer. However, this offer will not be available for passengers travelling exclusively on Alliance Air flights.

India to revise foreign policy for airlines

The Indian government is planning to revise its 5/20′ policy for international aviation.

India’s Civil Aviation Ministry has asked the government to create a replacement for the 5/20 rule. While the new policy is yet to be decided, it is likely to be a watered down version of the existing rule, in an effort to satisfy all parties.

The Economic Times quoted a ministry official, who requested to remain anonymous, as saying that two options are being discussed.

“One will be to reduce it to… two years and 10 aircraft, and the other would be to replace it by the domestic flying credits model,” the official said.

The domestic credits model would allow airlines to earn credits for the number and distance of domestic fights they operate. Once enough credits have been accumulated, the airline will be eligible to operate international flights.

India expands visa-on-arrival scheme to 150 countries

Tourists from 150 countries will be eligible to enter India using its new electronic visa-on-arrival (VoA) service, after the government confirmed plans to expand the scheme.

The decision forms part of the Indian government’s budget for 2015-16, and follows the launch of the VoA scheme for 43 countries in late November 2014.

Under the system, tourists are able to apply for a visa online, without having to visit the Indian embassy. Once approved, the applicant will receive an email authorising them to travel to India. This notification will then be presented to immigration authorities at one of nine Indian airports, allowing the visitor to obtain a visa-on-arrival. The UK, Canada, Malaysia, France and China will be included in the expanded scheme.

The initial list of 43 countries including several key source markets for India, such as the US, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, South Korea and the majority of Southeast Asian countries. Some notable omissions from the previous list, including the UK, Canada, Malaysia, France and China, will be included in the expanded scheme.

Following the progressive expansion of the initiative, only a handful of countries will not be eligible for VoA, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Somalia and Sudan.

New Indian carrier forays into northeast India

New Indian airline Vistara has unveiled plans for its first flights to the northeast of the country.

On 2 April 2015, the Delhi-based carrier will commence daily services to Guwahati, in the state of Assam, and Bagdogra, in West Bengal. The triangular route will operate daily, flying from Delhi to Guwahati, then on to Bagdogra, and finally back to Delhi.

The announcement of the new flights to Guwahati and Bagdogra comes in the same week that Vistara launched a new route between Delhi and Hyderabad.

Jet Airways to introduce India-Vietnam flight in Nov 2014

Jet Airways (India) Ltd. will introduce a flight to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam in November this year. This will be the airline's 22nd international destination. In 2011, Jet Airways had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vietnam Airlines to co-operate in commercial, technical, and training areas.

Currently there is no direct air link between India and Vietnam, Business Standard. The airline will extend its Delhi-Bangkok service to Ho Chi Minh City and passengers from Mumbai will be connected to the flight via Bangkok.

Jet Airways is also adding capacity on its Mumbai-Colombo flight (second flight) and Mumbai-Bangkok (third flight) from November.

IndiGo to introduce free of charge ‘Advance Pass’ service

IndiGo becomes the first airline in India to introduce the ‘Advance Pass’ service. A free of charge service, it allows the passenger to check-in and receive the boarding pass in their mail inbox 48 hours prior to the departure.

The passenger will then have to simply print the boarding pass before arriving at the airport and embark on a smooth hassle free journey. In any case, if they are unable to print the pass, they can always collect the boarding pass from the airport by following a regular queue.

Canada officially launches CAN+ Visa program for Indians

Canada has launched the CAN+ Visa programme for Indian passport holders, which will enable those who have travelled to either Canada or USA in the last ten years to get a Canada Visa within five days of submitting the application. Launched in India, China and Mexico on a pilot basis a few months ago, CAN+ Visa will now become a permanent feature in all three countries.

Jet Airways to launch daily flights to Amsterdam and Toronto

According to an ANI report, Jet Airways, India's premier international airline, has announced the launch of daily non-stop services between India and Amsterdam with effect from March 27, 2016. Jet Airways will operate two daily non-stop flights to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, one each from Mumbai and New Delhi. Jet Airways will also operate a daily flight from Toronto to Amsterdam. Schedules of all three flights have been planned to allow quick and convenient connections between India and Toronto over Amsterdam. These flights will be available for sale across all booking channels from December 15, 2015. Jet Airways will deploy its modern Airbus A330-300 aircraft with 34 seats in premiere and 259 seats in economy on these routes.

Qatar Airways touches down in Nagpur

Qatar Airways is now offering nonstop flights between its base in Doha and Nagpur, India. The daily service means that the Oneworld member now operates a total of 102 weekly flights to cities in India – up from 95 previously. As the third largest city in the Indian state of Maharashtra, Nagpur is a major trade and business centre that has been identified by the Government of India as one of its flagship smart metropolises. The city has a designated special economic zone and international cargo hub, while a new airport is currently in the pipeline. Qatar Airways operates an A320 to Nagpur with an average flight time of just over four hours. The single-aisle aircraft features a two-class configuration, with 12 seats in business and 132 in economy.

Japan to ease requirements for multiple-entry visas to Indians

Japan on Monday said it will ease requirements for issuing multiple-entry visas to short-term Indian travellers from January 11, days after India announced ‘visa on arrival’ to all Japanese citizens from March 1. Under the new visa system, the maximum period of stay will be extended to 30 days from the current 15, with visas valid for five years, up from three years, the Japanese Foreign Ministry was quoted as saying by The Japan Times. The move came after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi agreed on Saturday to promote people-to-people exchanges, the paper said. Modi had last week announced that India will extend ‘visa on arrival’ to all Japanese citizens from March 1, 2016. The foreign ministry also disclosed a plan to extend at an early stage the validity of multiple-entry visas for Indians visiting Japan for commercial purposes to 10 years instead of the current five.

Thailand launches 6 month multiple-entry visa

Thailand’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) has confirmed that a new six-month multiple-entry tourist visa (METV) has been launched from November 13, 2015. The visa, costing Rs 10,000 (5,000 baht) will grant travellers multiple entries during a six-month period, for up to 60 days per entry. All foreign nationals are eligible to apply for METV. Under the current rules, tourist visas are valid for just 60 days, after which visitors must leave the country or apply to a local immigration office for an extension. The new visa will allow visitors to enter and leave the country as often as they want over the six-month period; provide they leave the country every 60 days.

Indian travellers must be able to show a proof of funds in excess of Rs 400,000, 12-months’ validity on their passports and must display an intention to travel to Thailand at least twice during the six-month period in order to be eligible for the METV. One can only apply for an METV at a Royal Thai Consulate. It is not available on-arrival. Travellers should keep a buffer of two days, after submitting a completed visa form with all documents for the processing of an METV.

Air India to connect London with Ahmedabad

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed that Air India will launch a new flight between London and Ahmedabad. Addressing crowds at Wembley Stadium during his state visit to the UK, Modi revealed that “from December 15, there will be direct flights between London and Ahmedabad”. According to Air India however, the flights will operate via Mumbai. The new schedule will see services depart Ahmedabad at 0430 and arrive in Mumbai at 0545. Flights will then depart again at 0705 before arriving in London at 1130. The return service will then leave Heathrow Airport at 1330 and arrive at Mumbai at 0400 the next day. It will then depart Mumbai at 0530 and arrive back in Ahmedabad at 0645. All flights will be operated using a 256-seat Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft with business and economy class seats.The new route will complement Air India’s existing three daily services from Delhi to London Heathrow and daily flights from Mumbai.

Paris, is it safe to travel?

India has asked all its nationals in Paris to be vigilant while travelling and in crowded places in the aftermath of the horrific terror strikes in the night of November 13 which killed at least 129 people. In a security advisory, the Indian embassy in Paris has also advised its nationals to monitor those advisories issued by the Interior Ministry of the French Republic and French Prefecture of Police.

"For those undertaking travel to France, they are advised to be in touch with their respective airlines/travel agencies. As per the travel information issued by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, border checks are being instituted. Airports and railway links continue to operate," it added. The advisory also gave helpline numbers opened by the embassy and added that "as per the updated information available with the Embassy, there has been no news of any Indian affected by the terrorist incidents. "The Embassy requests all Indian nationals in Paris to inform the Embassy on the above given number if they have any news about the safety of Indian nationals."

Delta launches flat beds on Mumbai-Atlanta route

Delta has introduced its new flat-bed for its Business Elite seats on flights between Mumbai and Atlanta.

The new on-board product was rolled out from Mumbai on 30 March and will offer 200 full flat-bed seats per week for the business customer. In addition, the airline has also invested in its economy class with seats that provide additional legroom, adjustable headrests and personal in-seat entertainment screens.

More UK visa application centres in Mumbai

The United Kingdom has opened two new Visa Application Centres (VACs) in Mumbai.

The two new application centres will be located at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Nariman Point. The centre at BKC will also offer a new premium lounge offering applicants a plush and relaxed experience, with more privacy while applying for visa.

The UK also announced that it would be extending its “Passport Passback” service to all locations in India. This service allows applicants to retain their passports while visa decisions are being made, in particular to support business travellers needing to travel in the interim period. Lufthansa gets back on track after strikes

Lufthansa is getting its schedule up and running again after suffering from three days of pilot strikes.

The German carrier was forced to cancel 90% of its flights but has resumes a near-full schedule. The first of its resumed services landed in Germany from the US and Asia on Saturday morning. However, there are still 40 flights that have been cancelled during the weekend as its aircraft and crew are repositioned.

Cyclone Hudhud damages roof of Vizag Airport, no flights

Along with power and phone lines, the Visakhapatnam airport is also out of service. Sunday's 200kmph winds of Cyclone Hudhud has virtually blown off its roof and wreaked havoc inside. Ahmedabad gets direct flights to Abu Dhabi from November 14, 2014

Business and tourist travellers from Ahmedabad have a reason to cheer as Gujarat government today announced that from November 14, an international flight connecting Ahmedabad and Abu Dhabi will be launched. While those flights that were discontinued on select international routes including Ahmedabad-London will also be resumed, informed a state government statement. Indians can enter Philippines from all entry ports

Indians with AJACSSUK (Australia, Japan, Canada, Singapore, the US and UK) visa, can travel to the Philippines from any entry port, including major international airports and secondary international hubs, as well as in sea ports by passengers on board cruise ships/vessels. Indian nationals who have a valid AJACSSUK visa can enter Philippines without a visa for 14 days, as per a release.

Earlier, this policy was only applicable to Indians arriving at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport or Clark International Airport.

British-Irish visa Now available in India

The British-Irish Visa Scheme, which allows travel to the UK and Ireland on a single short-term visit visa, is now live in India. Ireland and the UK will share Visa Application Centres across India to provide this service, as per a release. All travellers applying for an Irish or British visa will need to use the shared Visa Application Centres, with effect from today.

The Scheme requires that visitors will have to travel first to the country that issued them the visa. For example, applicants with an Irish visa will have to first visit Ireland before the UK or Northern Ireland. However, visitors transiting via the UK to Ireland will not need a separate transit visa.

Australia to launch online visa applications for Indians

Indian visitors to Australia can now apply for visas online with the Australian government beginning a new online visa trial programme. Under the programme, the subclass 600 visa, which covers tourists and business visitors, can be applied online.

The trial for online visa applications is being launched in the first half of 2015 with the aim of capitalising on the visitor market and creating jobs.

Jet Airways Not to Charge for Cancellation Within 24 Hours

Jet Airways has decided not to charge any fee for cancellation and date change requests within 24 hours from passengers who book their tickets through the airline's website. Till now, the airline was charging Rs 5,000 for cancelling an international journey ticket and Rs 3,000 for changing the journey date. For the domestic sector, the fee for cancelling or changing the date of journey stood at Rs 1,750.

The new initiative allows passengers to amend or cancel their booking without any penalty fee by simply using the "manage booking" facility.

Cash-strapped carrier SpiceJet has extended its cancellations till next month affecting over 300 flights, but the government on Tuesday made it clear that the airline will have to itself resolve its financial woes.

Meanwhile, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is likely to put SpiceJet on the pre-payment mode from Wednesday midnight as the earlier deadline of the two-weeks credit window ends on Wednesday.

According to the latest update on the airline's website, over 300 flights have been cancelled till January 31, 2015, which include mostly domestic flights and a few connecting Nepal and Afghanistan.
